The Eunice Players’ Theatre is pleased to announce the third play of the 40th season, Moonlight and Magnolias, written by Ron Hutchinson. This two act comedy, directed by Debi L. Crawford, will open in early November.

Moonlight and Magnolias is set in 1939.  Famed Hollywood director David O. Selznick shuts down production of his epic movie, replaces his director with Victor Fleming and calls in the wonder boy of screenwriters, Ben Hecht. It is only left to the imagination what happens in that locked office for five long days and nights as the three Hollywood power houses rewrite the script for one of the most beloved films of all time, Gone With the Wind.

The cast of Moonlight and Magnolias has a mixture of veterans and a newcomer to the theatre. Playing the role of the producer, David O. Selznick, is Wesley Saunders of Pine Prairie. An experienced actor of the Eunice Players’ Theatre, he has starred in several shows, including The Cemetery Club and The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Michael Sanchez, of Eunice, will debut in his role as screenwriter Ben Hecht andis excited about this challenging role. The part of Hollywood director Victor Fleming will be played by Brett Faulkner of Eunice, another veteran of the stage. Brett has starred in several shows from playing a really bad Elvis impersonator in Bathroom Humor to the butcher in Fiddler on the Roof. The role of the diligent secretary to Mr. Selznick is being played by Amy Rider of Eunice. She also has several shows to her credit, most recently in Bathroom Humor.

The dates for the production of Moonlight and Magnolias are set for November 7th through the 15th and single tickets for this comedy will be available in late October. For more information, please call Debi L. Crawford at 337-457-2156 or log on to the Eunice Players' Theatre website.

Theatre--Review (Evangeline Players)

The Evangeline Players opened their production of Prescription: Murder, by William Link and Richard Levinson, at the Duchamp Opera House in St. Martinville tonight, Friday September 11. Performances continue September 20, 25, 26, and 27, with Friday and Saturday curtain time at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2:00.

Those of us of a certain age will be delighted to hear that this play, which premiered in 1962, was the inspiration for one of my favorites, the Columbo TV series starring Peter Falk. Our children, nieces and nephews, will be delighted to know that their peers, two of the Wunderkinder of local theatre, Joseph Diaz and Adel-Catherine Comeaux, have pivotal roles in making this production fly.

Director Diaz has assembled a cast that brings to life the classic Columbo plot. Dr. Flemming (Walter Brown) is a psychiatrist in a dead end marriage to a neurotic, jealous, nit-picking wife, Claire (Carmen Nicholson). He is in love with one of his patients, Susan (Adel Comeaux). Claire won’t give him a divorce? Well, bump her off!

It’s the perfect crime- or is it? Lieutenant Columbo (Milton Resweber) investigates the case. He appears to be an annoying, cigar-smoking (not really), bad-dressing, dim bulb, concerned with trivia- certainly no match for Flemming. Of course he is!

The cast is fleshed out with two smaller, but important characters. Audrey Thibodeaux is perfect as Flemming’s long suffering receptionist, Miss Petrie, and Don Voorhies blusters his way running interference for Flemming as Dave Gordon, the DA.

As you watch the play don’t be too distracted by Walter’s wonderful set or the lighting design by Jacob Mott. See if you can be one step ahead of Columbo. Pay attention! How would you nail Flemming and Susan if you were Columbo?

---Dr. Robert D. Sidman

Beyond Therapy, a student production at UL-Lafayette, is being sponsored by Alpha Psi Omega (the UL Theatre Honor Society).  It is a wildly absurd comedy about the quest for love in a dysfunctional world. It's about Bruce and Prudence who meet through a personal ad. Bruce is overly emotional and cries at the drop of the hat, Prudence wants a man who doesn't cry 'unless something falls on him'. Bruce is also bisexual. He has a male lover, Bob, and he wants Bob and Prudence to just get past their hostility and get along. Bruce and Prudence each go to therapy. Her therapist is a male chauvinist bully (and premature ejaculator) who she slept with after her second session. His therapist is eccentric and represses nothing! She has a Snoopy doll which she uses to 'bark' for encouragement.

The show opens October 15th at 7:30 pm and runs through the 17th in Fletcher Auditorium.    It is intended for adult audiences due to graphic language.

Theatre--Performance

Before it was a hit TV series, Columbo was a play called Prescription: Murder written by William Link and Richard Levinson. The play is exactly like a Columbo episode--in fact it was filmed as the pilot episode for the series. The audience sees the murder committed and the alibi established, then Columbo matches wits with the killer until the surprise ending. The play really does have a surprise ending.

Dr. Roy Flemming is a psychiatrist married to a neurotic wife, Claire. Since it is 1962, he cannot divorce her without her consent--and she is adamantly opposed to divorce. Then, he meets Susan Hudson, a young actress and they begin an affair. Soon, Flemming has decided that he must be free of Claire to marry Susan. He and Susan concoct an elaborate scheme to murder Claire but unfortunately for them Lt. Columbo is assigned to the case. He almost immediately suspects Flemming and begins a cat-and-mouse game hoping to make Flemming give himself away. Flemming parries him at every turn, even using political influence to have Columbo removed from the case. But even though Flemming sees through Columbo's bumbling mask, he still underestimates the policeman. Columbo has one final trick up his sleeve.

Prescription: Murder will run September 11th, 12th and 13th; 19th and 20th; 25th, 26th and 27th at the Duchamp Opera House in St. Martinville. The Opera House is located at the corner of Hwy. 31 and Hwy. 96 (Main and Terrace). Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 and Sunday matinees are at 2. Please be aware that there will be no performance on Friday, September 18.
The cast consists of Walter Brown (Lafayette) as Dr. Roy Flemming. Carmen Nicholson (New Iberia) plays his wife, Claire. Adel-Catherine Comeaux (St. Martinville) plays Susan Hudson, Audrey Thibodeaux (New Iberia) plays Flemming's secretary, Miss Petrie and Donald "Doc" Voorhies plays Dave Gordon, a politician with eyes on the governor's mansion. Lt. Columbo is played by Milton Resweber (St. Martinville and Scott). The performance is directed by Joseph Diaz (Lafayette) and produced by Walter Brown.

Theatre and Dance--Performances

The Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (PASA) has announced an incredible lineup of dance, theater and opera as entertainment for its Daytime Performances for Students series. Experiencing live performances for students and teachers is an important educational opportunity that takes learning out of books and classrooms, and brings it to life onstage. The Daytime Series events, for middle and high school students from throughout south Louisiana, will take place during the 2009-2010 school year.

The series kicks off on Monday, September 21, with a sizzling blend of African, modern ballet and hip-hop stylings by Evidence Dance Company. Next up will be Montana Rep's dramatic staging of To Kill A Mockingbird on Monday, October 19. The series concludes with a special daytime performance of the opera Porgy and Bess on Wednesday, March 8, 2010. All performances will be at 10: 30 a.m at the Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette. Tickets for these performances are $5 per person and reservations must be made through the PASA office by calling (337) 237-2787.

In advance of each performance, PASA provides each attending student an informative study guide, BackStage Pass, which is printed courtesy of The Daily Advertiser. This guide prepares students and teachers with information and activities that will enhance the value of attending the performance and underscores the educational fundamentals that are core to curricula.

The performances for the 2009-2010 school year will provide students with a wide variety of performing arts experiences, all of them of the highest quality and professionalism.

The first event in the series, a dance performance by Evidence Dance Company on September 21, has been generating buzz with audiences worldwide with its storyteller-approach to modern dance. Choreographer, principal dancer and artistic director Ronald K. Brown demonstrates his anthropological pursuits when he joins his dance company Evidence, in a blend of African, modern ballet and hip-hop stylings to tell stories. This performance will include his fascinating piece Two Year-Old Gentleman that melds Louisiana’s Mardi Gras Indians into a comment on rites of passage from boys to men.

Next up on the series (on October 19) is the Montana Reparatory Theater Company’s dramatic return to the Heymann Center stage with its staging of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. The novel is a must-read for every student and the performance is a must-see for teachers and students. A classic tale of honesty, integrity and courage is as timeless today as it was when it emerged 50 years ago. Set in a fictional southern town, its colorful characters include the memorable Atticus Finch and the unforgettable recluse Boo Radley.

To Kill A Mockingbird is also part of the Big Read Acadiana program. The Big Read is an initiative by the National Endowment for the Arts to engage communities across the nation in celebrating great literary works through a diverse array of activities. Several elementary, middle and high schools across Acadiana are participating as Big Read project schools. Find out how your school can be a part of this literary movement by calling the PASA office for more information.

Finally on March 8, 2010, Porgy and Bess, the distinctively American opera, closes out the daytime student series with a sweeping tale of love, loss and triumph over despair. This tale features the music of great American composers George and Ira Gershwin. Every student should attend a live professional opera and Porgy and Bess features a cast of 30 performers and a live orchestra. Performed in English with projected supertitles, this opera features a memorable score that includes the well-known songs “Summertime”,” I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So”.

These performances are presented by PASA with the sponsorship support of lead sponsor Capital One and the Wilkinson Family Foundation

Theatre--Auditions

Acting Unlimited will hold open auditions for Calderon de la Barca's 1640's masterpiece Life Is a Dream (La Vida Es Sueno). This is a comedy/drama which explores questions of fate vs. free will, human dignity, feminism, political power and moral responsibility. This version will edit the script for a tighter plot and character structure by trimming some of the longer speeches. No characters will be removed or abbreviated.

The production needs 2 middle-aged to elderly men, 2 young men, 2 young women and 1 man or woman of any age but physically active.

They are also looking for people who like to work behind the scenes as costumers, prop masters, makeup artists, painters, carpenters, light/sound board operators and scenic, lighting and costume designers.

Auditions will be held at Cite Des Arts (corner of Buchanan and Vine in downtown Lafayette) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Monday, September 14th and Tuesday, September 15th and again on Saturday, September 19th from 2-4. Performances are January 11th-27th, 2010.

Auditioners do not need to prepare an audition piece--they will read from the script. Familiarity with Classic theatre is not necessary--they will teach you what you need to know. The translation sounds contemporary and the style will be modified naturalism.

If you have any questions, call Walter Brown at 235-6284 or Danny Povinelli at 201-1696 or email Brown or Povinelli.

This is a great play and should be a great theatre experience for any actor, designer or technician.

Dance--Performance

Evidence Dance Company, a group that has been wowing audience worldwide kicks off the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana’s (PASA) new season at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 20 at the Heymann Performing Arts Center.

Vibrant dance steps, complex patterns and powerful images are part of Ron K. Brown style. The New York Times dance critic Anna Kisselgoff described the company as “dancers who understand Brown’s expressive purpose.” Since the birth of his company, Evidence Dance Company, in 1985, the Brooklyn-born Brown has created exciting choreography using West African dance, urban jazz and hip hop moves, with elements of storytelling. Through dance, Brown explores the history of blacks in America and passes on African culture in a manner that Brown describes as “physical narratives or journeys.” With each performance, Evidence Dance Company provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. “I named my company Evidence, because the work that we present is evidence of life circumstance, background, and all the information that comes into us,” says Brown. “I want audiences to understand my stories and messages… and share a sense of community.”

Evidence Dance Company consists of 10 dancers from a diverse array of professional and educational backgrounds. One of the company members Clarice Young, is a graduate of the University of Louisiana Lafayette’s Performing Arts Department. Evidence members Francine Ott and Joel Sule’ Adams are also Louisiana natives.

The New York Post says, “Brown is one of the hottest choreographers now working in modern dance”

The Evidence Dance program includes Brown’s fascinating piece Two Year-Old Gentleman, which reflects Brown’s study of the Louisiana’s Mardi Gras Indians as part of a wider cultural commentary on rites of passage from boys to men. This all-male work emphasizes the importance of community and strong male relationships across generations. The “two year old gentlemen” of the title refer to Brown’s late grandfather and his own nephew Ame, who performs with the company. Two Year Old Gentleman explores and the bond of unconditional love that existed between them.

PASA will host a mask-making workshop led by Lafayette Mardi Gras Indians; an open workshop, led by Ron Brown; a lecture by author and cultural expert Jason Berry; and a daytime performance for middle and high school students.

Tickets for Evidence Dance Company are available through TicketMaster outlets, by phone at 1(800)745-3000, or online at www.pasaonline.org. Tickets are available for as little as $7 and student and group discounts are available. This performance and all activities in associated with Evidence Dance Company are sponsored by Chevron and the Louisiana Lottery.
