This weekend- At Home at the Zoo !!

At Home at the Zoo, a play by Edward Albee, began in 1958 as an award winning one act called The Zoo Story. Peter, an unsuspecting bookworm, is accosted by Jerry in Central Park. Jerry, a "permanent transient," lives on the fringe of society and reality. He seems intent on breaking Peter out of his shell and pushing him to his limits. Jerry regales Peter with tales wondrous and incomprehensible, both explaining and concealing his true purpose.

 
      Nearly fifty years later, Edward Albee returned to this world with the prequel one act, Homelife. We find Peter, before he leaves for the park, reading at home. His wife, Ann, interrupts him with three dreaded words, "We should talk." Peter is unresponsive and Ann is distracted, soon forgetting what she wanted to talk about. Or has she?

      The two acts, performed together, comprise At Home at the Zoo, an exceptional play about the complexity of human relationships both old and new. It strikes at the underlying currents of the subconscious through characters extraordinarily absurd, hilarious, loving, respectful and irreverent.

Commercial Acting Class Postponed until Feb. 16th and 17th!

So, the good thing about taking a commercial acting class from a working actor is that you receive up to date information about what's happening in today's industry as well as learn a technique that's been proven to book jobs.

 

The bad thing is that sometimes that working actor works and it conflicts with class. Bill Coelius' Commercial Acting Class has been postponed until Feb 16th and 17th. Luckily, there are still spots left!

AUDITIONS! Death Takes a Holiday

Auditions for the UL Lafayette Opera Theatre's spring 2013 production of Maury Yeston's 2011 musical, Death Takes a Holiday.  The show will be directed by Shawn Roy with musical direction by David Boudreaux. 

There are roles for 7 women and 7 men.

Auditions are Saturday, January 19 starting at 9:30am in Burke Hall on the UL Lafayette campus. Please bring a musical theatre song. A pianist will be provided. You may be also asked to read from the script of the show. 

The musical will run from March 21 - 24 in Burke Hall. Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 9:00PM and Fridays from 4:00 - 7:00PM.

Allen and Michelle have been living together for eighteen months. It is the first real relationship for both of them. Michelle thinks they should marry; Allen isn’t sure. His hesitancy drives her home to her parents for advice Michelle’s Father isn’t aware that it is Allen’s mother he has been seeing for the last six months and would now like to get rid of, nor does Michelle’s mother know that it is Allen’s father she has just spent the night with and would like to see more of The pieces fall uproariously into place when the parents decide to meet the young lovers over dinner to lend their maturity and experience for the benefit of their children’s relationship. It’s suddenly everyone for himself in this wild, rollicking look at love and romance

Honk! -Jan 31

     CYT Lafayette - Based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling, Honk! tells the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother. Soon after Ugly is born, he is seduced away by a wily Cat who wants to eat Ugly for dinner. Eventually, Ugly manages to escape but has no idea how to return home. Along his way, he encounters a beautiful swan, Penny, tangled in a fishing line. After saving her, the two birds fall in love. However, she must return to her flock and fly south for the winter. Eventually, Ugly’s mother finds him frozen in snow. Luckily, her warm tears manage to thaw him out and he comes back to life – as a handsome swan! Soon, Ugly is reunited with Penny and two swans decide to live the rest of their days in the same pond as Ugly’s loyal mother.

At Home in the Zoo -Jan25

     An independent production of Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo will open on Friday January 25th, 2013 at Theatre 810. 
     At Home at the Zoo began as a one-act play written by Albee, and was originally titled Zoo Story. Zoo Story follows the character, Peter, a mild –mannered, somewhat aloof man who is accosted in the park by Jerry, a transient who lives on the fringes. Peter’s encounter with Jerry pushes him to his limits, as Jerry’s untamed behavior and wild stories challenge Peter’s notion of truth.
     After nearly 50 years, Albee wrote the prequel to Zoo Story with another one act entitled Homelife. In Homelife, Albee takes us into the home of Peter and his wife, Ann. Peter is absorbed in a book when Ann interrupts him with the words, “we should talk.” Albee presents Peter and Ann’s domestic normalcy and contrasts it with Ann’s need for excitement and passion in a conversation that takes place right before Peter takes that fateful walk to the park.
     The two acts performed together comprise At Home at the Zoo, and will feature Scott Gremillion as Peter, Cooper Helm as Jerry,  and Katryn Schmidt as Ann. Cooper Helm is directing. Performance times are as follows:

I certainly hope that everyone has hand a wonderful holiday season so far!  We've a bit of downtime after a push push of some wonderful shows before Christmas, but now it seems like it's time for theatre to start back up in Acadiana!
