Theatre--Performance (Musical Theatre)

South Pacific, the legendary Broadway and movie hit, will be presented by the Iberia Performing Arts League opening Friday, March 25 and running Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons thru April 10.  Evening performances are at 7:30 and Sunday Matinees are at 3:00 at the Essanee Theater, IPAL’s Art Deco home.  Ticket or other information can be obtained by calling the theater at 364-6114, e-mailing ipal@cox.net, or by visiting the IPAL website.  The production is directed by Donald “Doc” Voorhies, and stars Mike Parich (Emile de Becque), Kim Monroe (Nellie Forbush), Helen Allain Richthofen (Bloody Mary), Phillip Smith (Lt. Joe Cable), and Thomas Owens (Luther Billis). Additional leading roles are Anne Catherine Leblanc (Liat), Mike Berry (Brackett), Bud Forrest (Harbison), Matthew Dugan (Professor), James Wyche (Stewpot), Faye Tarantino (Henriette), Breigh Rodriguez (Ngana), William Lambert (Jerome), and Rhonda Leblanc (Polynesian woman).

South Pacific opened on Broadway in 1949 and won 10 Tony Awards. Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, it ran for nearly 2000 performances. The 2008 Lincoln Center production won 7 Tony Awards and even today continues on its national tour.  The show features well known standards: "Some Enchanted Evening", "Bali Hai", "Nothin’ Like a Dame", "Younger Than Springtime" and many more.

IPAL’s South Pacific will have a cast of forty-five singers and dancers accompanied by a sixteen piece orchestra.  According to director, Don “Doc” Voorhies, “South Pacific is simply a beautiful show. The music and dancing combined with a truly engrossing historical story make this show outstanding. Some critics have said South Pacific is the greatest musical of all. This is not far from the truth."  For this very special show, IPAL has invited a number of World War II veterans to be its guests, which will make the evening an even more moving experience.

IPAL is working its usual magic and is expecting to have a great show. In Voorhies’ production staff are Helen Hodge (Vocal Director), Bob Morgan (Orchestra Conductor), Travis Guillory (Assistant Director), Kim Parich (Choreographer), Sheila Manes (Art Director), Mike and Katherine Caffery (Technical Directors) and Julie Kilgore (Costumer).

Renaissance 'Cadienne will present Cajun Wedding on Saturday, February 12th at 7:30 pm at Cite Des Arts.  


The first part of the show will be a presentation of song and dance dating from the mid-1800s to the turn of the century. Then you are all invited to a Cajun wedding in the year 1900, complete with songs, dances, customs, and period costumes.

Renaissance 'Cadienne is a Cajun folkloric troupe, dedicated to preserving and presenting the songs and dances of our ancestors. The troupe had a very successful tour of France this past summer. Renaissance 'Cadienne has performed numerous times in France, Belgium, Canada, at various festivals in the US, as well as locally in Louisiana.

Renaissance 'Cadienne was presented the Prize for Authenticity by the Sacres du Folklore in Rheims, France and has received Vermilionville's Cultural Heritage Preservation Award.

The Acadiana Center for the Arts is bringing the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company to offer two nights of performances that include works from the company's extensive and diverse repertoire. 


On Thursday, February 10th at 7:30 pm, Houston Metropolitan Dance will present  Zoom, a full-throttle work that embraces its title, written by renowned jazz choreographer Pattie Obey.


On Friday, February 11th at 7:30 pm, NYC based choreographer Kate Skarpetowska introduces Consumed, an intense, frenetic, powerful and athletic piece that touches on the human need for different elements to control. 


Admission is $13 for members ($10 in advance) and $15 for non-members ($12 in advance).  Tickets are available at the AcA box office, located in the AcA at 101 W. Vermilion Street.

IPAL will hold open auditions for Agatha Christie’s The Unexpected Guest directed by Travis Guillory. Auditions will be held Monday, March 28th and Tuesday, March 29th at 5:30 pm. Performances will be June 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, 2011

On a foggy night in South Wales, Michael Starkwedder crashes his car in a ditch and enters the darkened study of Richard Warwick to find Warwick dead and Warwick's wife, Laura, standing near with a smoking gun. Despite the murder being obvious and overwhelming evidence pointing towards it, Starkwedder does not believe she killed him. The two decide to place the blame on an enemy from the past, MacGregor, a man whose son was run over by Richard while he was driving drunk. As the story progresses, the two fake the fact that they were just finding out about the murder and others in the house are introduced. The police suspect everyone in the house, but are especially puzzled by a set of unidentified fingerprints. Are they MacGregor’s? Or do they belong to Laura’s lover whom Laura has lied to protect? Murder, jealousy, craftiness, and witty humor add up to equal another one of Agatha Christie’s surprise endings.

Theatre--Auditions

Auditions for Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues will be held Sunday February 13 and Tuesday February 15 at Cité des Arts (109 Vine St., Lafayette, LA 70501).  Women of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of prior acting experience, are invited to audition.  To audition, arrive at between 3:00 and 6:00 on Sunday or between 5:00 and 8:00 on Tuesday; it is not necessary to prepare anything.

            

Performances will be held April 1st and 2nd at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (exact location TBA). 

            

The Vagina Monologues is the highlight of Lafayette’s V-Day events.  V-Day is a global movement aimed at ending violence against women and girls.  V-Day Lafayette 2011 events will include a Valentine’s Day fundraiser (flower and bake sale on campus), a kick-off party, a benefit concert, a workshop for 9th-12th grade girls, and a dodgeball tournament, in addition to performances of The Vagina Monologues.  All proceeds benefit local non-profit organizations working to reduce violence against women.

Theatre--Auditions/Theatre--Auditions (Musical Theatre)

AUI/AURA will present Lerner and Lowe's musical fantasy, Brigadoon, in repertory with William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performances will be held the last week of July and the first two weeks of August.

Open auditions for all roles in both shows will be held from 1-5 PM on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13 at Cite Des Arts (corner of Vine and Buchanan in downtown Lafayette). 

For Brigadoon, auditioners will be asked to sing a ballad of their own choosing, do a movement audition and read a scene from the script. Auditioners are welcome to use music from the show and sheet music suitable for auditions can be acquired upon request.

The leads are Tommy Albright, an American (Baritone) and Fiona MacLaren, a Scots lass (Soprano). Second leads are Jeff Douglas, Tommy's American friend (non-singing comic role) and Meg Brockie, a Scots Gypsy (Mezzo).  Third leads are Charlie Dalrymple, a young Scotsman (tenor--believe it!) and Jeannie MacLaren, Fiona's sister and his fiancee (non-singing dance lead with a lot of lines).  Principle supporting roles are Harry Beaton, Jeannie's scorned suitor (non-singing dance lead with lines), Mr. Lundie, an older schoolmaster, Andrew MacLaren, Fiona and Jeannie's father, Archie Beaton, Harry's father and Jane Ashton, Tommy's American Fiancee (one scene, but a good one).

There is also one role for a dancer with no lines which will be cut if no one auditions for it. Most chorus have some solo moments and lines.

The leads should all play late teens to mid-thirties; the supporting roles play forties or older. Chorus can be any age from 6-90. Jane Ashton is the same age as Fiona and Tommy. Jeff can be older than Tommy.

A Midsummer Night's Dream will require 15-20 actors, including those with special skills as dancers, singers, acrobats or musicians.  Actors of all ages, sizes and levels of acting experience are encouraged to audition.

Interested actors should prepare a 2 minute monologue from any play by Shakespeare (comedies preferred, not Midsummer). Some actors will also be asked to do cold readings from the script.  Interested singers may prepare a 30-second a capella vocal piece. Interested dancers, acrobats and musicians should be prepared to discuss their previous experience and training.

The UL-Lafayette School of Music Department of Performing Arts is proud to present a studio project directed by Camille Bulliard.  The project is Tape, written by Stephen Belber.  The show involves three high school friends who reunite years later.  Tape examines questions of motive, memory, truth and perception.  The cast is Bailey Hebert (Vince), Jeremy Drewery (Jon) and Ashley Brown (Amy).  Costume and set design were done by students.  The show runs Thursday, February 10th through Saturday, February 12th.

Tickets are free for UL-Lafayette students with ID, $5 for alumni and/or seniors and $10 general admission.  Tickets are available in advance.

Abbey Players announce their winter production of Blithe Spirit, written by Noel Coward.

Novelist Charles Condomine newly married to straight-laced Ruth, invites their friends the Bradmans to join them for drinks along with a local clairvoyant, Madame Arcati. Via a séance, Charles accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira. Chaos ensues as Charles tries keep both wives at bay.

The show will open February 18th, 2011 and will run 6 consecutive weeks, Friday and Saturday nights. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the show starts at 8:00pm. Matinee performances are February 27th and March 13th.

The spring sessions classes of CYT have been posted to the website and registration is officially open.  Classes begin on Tuesday, February 15th at 4:30 pm at First Baptist Church.  Beauty and the Beast (the next CYT production) auditions will be held on Thursday, February 17th and Friday, February 18th.

As We Grow?! highlights student actors from Acting Up (in Acadiana) ages 7-17 in their 2011 showcase.  Students wrote 95% of the material in this original work that ponders creativity, play, technology, and social networking.  Performances take place at the Acadiana Center for the Arts on January 28th at 7:30 pm and January 29th at 2 pm and 7:30 pm.

The Evangeline Players of St. Martinville will hold open auditions for Uncommon Women and Others by Wendy Wasserstein on Saturday and Sunday, February 19th and 20th from 1-3 pm at the Duchamp Opera House located at 200 S. Main Street in St. Martinville (corner of Hwy. 96 and Hwy. 32, across from the church square).

The play will be under the direction of Charlee Halphen who teaches theatre in Iberia Parish and who directed Ghosts for the Evangeline Players last Fall. 

The play takes place in 1978 with flashbacks to 1972-3 as the main characters recall their college lives and contrast them with their present lives.

The director is looking for 9 women and one man (who is the narrator).  Most of the women are in their twenties but there is a part for a middle-aged or older woman.

Performances are scheduled for May 13th through the 22nd.

Dance--Performance

 The stage will sizzle when the national tour of Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca—a passionate combination of flamenco dance, music and beautiful costumes--hits the stage as part of the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (PASA) season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 26 at the Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette.

Hailed by critics everywhere for its exciting and transcendent performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco touring company in world. Under the direction of Martin Santangelo, the award-winning Noche Flamenca has become Spain’s most successful touring company. Formed in 1993 by Santangelo and his award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, they have successfully brought to the stage the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms. Noche Flamenca highlights include regular seasons in New York City and Buenos Aires, performances in Greece and Egypt and annual tours to North America.

 "Flamenco dance can be considered a cousin to tap dance," says Jacqueline Lyle, PASA's executive director. "Unlike tap shoes, which have taps on the soles of the shoes, flamenco shoes have nail heads. Tap dancers tend to bounce up, while flamenco dancers work hard down into the floor. When flamenco dance combines its fiery character with the incredible work of this company's flamenco guitarists and singers, the entire show becomes spell-binding."
