Before it was a hit TV series, Columbo was a play called Prescription: Murder written by William Link and Richard Levinson. The play is exactly like a Columbo episode--in fact it was filmed as the pilot episode for the series. We see the murder committed and the alibi established, then Columbo matches wits with the killer until the surprise ending. The play really does have a surprise ending.
Dr. Roy Flemming is a psychiatrist married to a neurotic wife, Claire. Since it is 1962, he cannot divorce her without her consent--and she is adamantly opposed to divorce. Then, he meets Susan Hudson, a young actress and they begin an affair. Soon, Flemming has decided that he must be free of Claire to marry Susan. He and Susan concoct an elaborate scheme to murder Claire but unfortunately for them Lt. Columbo is assigned to the case. He almost immediately suspects Flemming and begins a cat-and-mouse game hoping to make Flemming give himself away. Flemming parries him at every turn, even using political influence to have Columbo removed from the case. But even though Flemming sees through Columbo's bumbling mask, he still underestimates the policeman. Columbo has one final trick up his sleeve.
Prescription: Murder will run September 11th, 12th and 13th; 19th and 20th; 25th, 26th and 27th at the Duchamp Opera House in St. Martinville. The Opera House is located at the corner of Hwy. 31 and Hwy. 96 (Main and Terrace). Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 and Sunday matinees are at 2. Please be aware that there will be no performance on Friday, September 18.
The cast consists of Robert D. Sidman (Lafayette) as Dr. Roy Flemming. Carmen Nicholson (New Iberia) plays his wife, Claire. Adel-Catherine Comeaux (St. Martinville) plays Susan Hudson, Audrey Thibodeaux (New Iberia) plays Flemming's secretary, Miss Petrie and Donald "Doc" Voorhies plays Dave Gordon, a politician with eyes on the governor's mansion. Lt. Columbo is played by Milton Resweber (St. Martinville and Scott). The performance is directed by Joseph Diaz (Lafayette) and produced by Walter Brown.

Theatre(Film)--Workshop
(This notice is a departure from the usual postings, but film acting is of interest to many local readers.)
On August 29th and 30th Shawn Nelson will be bringing a plethora of knowledge and skills to the Celtic Media Centre in Baton Rouge for his Film Acting Master Class for 2009!
A 2009 Film Acting Master Class is now forming to serve both experienced and aspiring actors in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area!
Baton Rouge native, Shawn Nelson, now a Los Angeles acting teacher and coach to stars of film and television for over twenty-five years is instructing a two-day On-Camera Film Acting Master Class, designed to bring to local area actors a wealth of professional information and valuable technique, to insure the finest performance outcome when auditioning for and performing in local film production!
Production companies want to cast locally when they can – it helps their budgets, is good for public relations, and brings them valuable local tax considerations as well.
Now is a great time to get your chops up and be ready for the next casting session! This master class is not for atmosphere extras and stand-ins, but for on-camera talent and stunt professionals looking to improve their film acting skills. Class size will be very limited (20) so that each actor will have ample time to work on camera and learn important acting technique first hand over the two-day master class.
Seminar fee is $250 for a two-day, 12 hour on-camera acting seminar. The first five to sign up get a free 7 CD audio course in acting, "The Impersonal Actor", that Shawn has created, value $100.
Go to http://www.shawnnelson.info/ for more information on Shawn Nelson Acting, and email shawnnelsonacting@yahoo.com with any questions or to register for this class.
All applicants will be considered, with first-seating going to industry professionals, Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA members. Participants may be asked to show proof of age, 18 years or older, and no one but the participants themselves may attend the seminar. Fees are collected in advance and are non-refundable; attendees will not be refunded for any unattended days. In the event of cancellation of seminar all fees will be immediately refunded.
Please remember that seating is limited to 20 students!

Theatre--Auditions
Ray Blum has reconsidered his decision to produce The Taffetas and instead has written a play that is based on the type of variety show that Ed Sullivan produced in the 50's. Instead of four women singing the same type of songs, he has included men and women singing pop stuff, doo-wop (Frankie Lyman, etc) , close-part male quarted (The Four Lads, etc), C & W (Patsy Cline, Tennessee Ernie Ford and friends) movie and television stuff (Mr. Ed, Rawhide). Here is a listing of the music:
Entire Company: Jambalaya, Mickey Mouse Club March, Volare
Female Quartet: The Boy Next Door / You Made Me Love You, Hi-Lily, Hi-Lo, Rum and Coca-Cola, Old Cape Cod, Mr. Sandman, Born Too Late, Leader of the Pack
Female Trio: Three Coins in a Fountain
Female Solo: Crazy, Ebb Tide, Doggy in the Window
Male/Female Quartet: Catch a Falling Star
Male/Female Duet: Mist, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, Tennessee Waltz
Male Quartet: Rawhide, Moments to Remember (male quartet with female backup), Banana Boat Song, That Lucky Old Sun, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?
Male Solo: Mister Ed, El Paso, Ballad of Davy Crockett (male solo with backup), Ballad of Thunder Road (male solo with female backup), Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, Sixteen Tons (male solo with male backup).
He is going to extend tryouts through the week with an RSVP. If you are interested in auditioning, please contact Ray Blum at rayblum44@gmail.com. The cast will be given the score and script by the end of this week. Rehearsal will be for three weeks starting the week of September 14th to 18th and have a two-weekend run (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) starting October 15th.
