Theatre--Review (Firelight Performing Arts)
Last night (May 15) I went with friends to see the penultimate performance of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, produced by Firelight Performing Arts, the brain child of Laura and Ray Blum. Since Firelight is a sort of training ground for young, some very young, protothespians, the playing space is modest and the young cast pretty much unfamiliar (to me, anyway) I didn’t know what to expect.
What a hoot and a delight! The cast, with the exception of the geezers, were adorable and talented. I am sure “adorable” because of their moms and dads. But the total product- including dancing, singing, acting, set and costume changes- was the creation of Laura and Ray. The performance I saw was throughly enjoyable with no pregnant pauses. Since Oliver! had twelve performances with several parts double (or even triple) cast, one can marvel at the Blums' handling of the logistical problems.
Since I have appeared on stage with several of the “geezers” I don’t want to ignore them (we just aren’t adorable). They did wonderful pro bono work to flesh out the musical. Laura Blum (Nancy ) has a wonderful voice and was “sweet”. Vincent Barras (Fagin) has (had) a wonderful beard and was “slimy”. Jackie Robinson (Bill Sykes) was just downright “evil”. Ray Blum was just standing and smiling throughout like everyone’s favorite uncle.
Anyway, the whole evening was enjoyable to me and I had no nephew or niece in the show.

The Firelight Performing Arts adult group Is opening their spring show, Bell, Book and Candle, next Thursday (February 25). The show will run Thursday February 25th through the 27th and March 4th through the 6th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available on the website or by calling (337) 962-0306. Below is a little information about the show.
Greenwhich Village witch Gillian Holroyd (Sandy Landry) has been unlucky in love and restless in life. She admires from afar her neighbor, publisher Shep Henderson (Mitch Landry), who one day walks into her apartment to use the telephone. When she learns he is about to marry an old college enemy of hers, Merle Kittridge, she takes revenge by casting a love spell on him (with assistance from her familiar, Pyewacket), but begins falling for him herself.
Meanwhile, the author of a best-selling book, Magic in Mexico, whom Shep has expressed an interest in meeting, arrives on the scene (thanks to a little magic). Sidney Redlitch (Vincent P. Barras), who is researching a book on witches in New York, acquires an "inside" collaborator when Gillian's warlock brother Nicky (John Bess) volunteers his services--in exchange for a portion of the proceeds. Add a bit of help and mischief from Gillian's Aunt Queenie (Laura Blum) and you have the makings of a spell you won't soon forget.

Gillian Holroyd is just the average, modern-day witch, living in a New York apartment with her familiar Pyewacket, a cat to help her do her bidding. But when a handsome publisher, Shep Henderson becomes her tenant, she decides that she wants him. So, Gillian casts a spell over Shep, something that delights Gillian's Aunt Queenie, another witch, and her brother Nicky, a warlock. Throw into the mix Sidney Redlitch, a drunken author researching a book on witchcraft, and there's a comedy of untold proportions.
